Competition horse’s joints come under daily strain. But on top of daily work routines fast work, jumping and uneven surfaces all put extra pressure on joints and can result in reduced performance, an increased incidence of lameness or even a premature end to a horse’s career.

Glucosamine plays a vital role in supporting and maintaining connective tissues which are crucial for joint health and mobility. Glucosamine is a small molecule which is a major building block of Proteoglycans that stimulate articular cartilage formation. Articular cartilage is the tough, elastic tissue which covers the ends of bones in joints and enables them to move smoothly over one another and to withstand enormous pressures. Proteoglycans are needed by cartilage to attract and hold water and collagen. During training, racing and competition the horse’s need for cartilage forming and supporting nutrients is increased.

Manganese is a trace element principally involved in bone formation and is necessary for synthesis of chondroitin sulphate. It plays an important role in maintaining healthy, supple joints and defi ciency may result in low levels of chondroitin sulphate in growth plate cartilage.
